Top Tips For Putting Your Business Online

It is the digital age and all businesses should have an online presence use these tips to avoid common pitfalls.

Things You Need To Know When Putting Your Business Online in 2019

There are many reasons why you are probably thinking of having a web design created for your business. However in a moment I will give you 10 important points that should be considered when having your website designed.

1. Avoid FREE hosting

This kind of hosting can be very attractive due to it being free, however the downsides can be great. Lack of functionality, not being able to use your own domain, very small bandwidth and a small amount of space for your website etc.

Another problem with free hosting tends to be ‘uptime’ which means that your customer sometimes will not be able to even access your website.

Another problem with free hosting is your page load speed will probably be much slower. At a time when google has placed an emphasis on page load times as a SEO ranking factor this is not a good thing at all.

2. Keyword analysis should be your first step

Before any of the design process can begin you need to know what keywords or phrases your customers will use to find you in the search engines. Only when you have this information can you pick the right domain and know how to optimize your new web design to get the most amount of traffic.

3. Make sure your web design is search engine optimized (SEO)

If you want people to find your site then you need to use the keywords and phrases from your ‘keyword analysis’ in your content and within the html code of the page. By doing this it will help the search engines to rank your website higher and get you targeted traffic (Getting people onto your site that want to be there). Any SEO company offering guaranteed search positions within 'Google' should be viewed with a large amount of skepticism.

Now you have lot of traffic going to your website that is still not the end of it. At this point you need to improve the conversion rate of your website and when I say conversion I mean the percentage of traffic coming to your website that complete a goal be it a sale, sign up or lead etc. There are many ways to do this, one is to use split testing where you serve up two or more versions of a page then track and analyze the data from your Google analytics.

4. Template web design verses custom web design

The internet is a very crowed place and having a website designed using templates that have been used many times before will not give your website the best chance of standing out in the crowd.

Using a custom design will make you stand out and potentially give your visitors a great experience that they won’t forget. Building an identity for your business on the internet is best achieved by custom design every time.

You could use a combination of both but then the costs would be higher than just a template design alone.

We can provide template designed websites at a lower cost but I leave that decision to you. As they say you get what you pay for in this life unfortunately.

5. Be Aware of bandwidth limits with hosting

The bandwidth of your hosting is a measure of the maximum amount of traffic your website hosting company will allow before charging you extra. It is usually given in Gb (Giga Bytes), the more people that view your site the higher your bandwidth usage will go.

Also having more images/graphics and video on your site will have a greater impact on your bandwidth usage. I would recommend for peace of mind unlimited bandwidth with your hosting, check out the hosting services we provide.

6. Have a clear picture of what you want from your website at the beginning

This is important when designing your site, to make sure that the functionality is available in your site from the beginning to get what you want out of it. This could be ‘sales leads’, ‘brand building’, ‘actual sales’ or more importantly just improving your customers experience with your company.

7. Content is king

The content or text in your site is very important to search engines and how you are ranked. As I mentioned earlier the content should be littered with your keywords and phrases (example for me is ‘web design cornwall’), but just as important it must be relevant to your product or service and be helpful to your visitors. However I wouldn't say that 'Content is king' is a truly accurate statement but it is definitely a big part of an overall process.

8. Get the right domain name

Your domain name will play a role in how you are ranked in the search engines, so you must get it correct. You should use at least one keyword within it and try to keep it short and easy for your customers to remember. In recent years some have said that this is no longer used by Google, I disagree, however I do believe that its influence on ranking has diminished but right now it is still important.

9. The truth about inbound linking

The more links you have coming into your website from places on the internet the better ranking you will get from the search engines. However there are some common misconceptions about these inbound links.

A link from a site that you link back to (Link swapping) will mostly be ignored by the search engines. Links from websites that have content that is relevant to your content will be much more favorable to your ranking than links from websites with totally unrelated content.

Using ‘link exchanging’ websites can harm your ranking. The popularity and trust of the site that is linking to you is also very important.

More information will be made available about this on our ‘web design cornwall BLOG’ which is coming soon…

10. Where do your target customers live

Where your target customers are located is very important for the design of your site. When choosing your domain for instance, if your customers are located in the UK then you should use a ‘.co.uk’ domain. Also when optimizing your site you should use your target customers location within the keywords.

An example for my company would be ‘web design cornwall’, notice the use of the location cornwall or I could be more specific and use ‘St Austell, Cornwall’.

11. Make sure your website is mobile friendly

For a while now mobile devices contribute for more than 50% of all internet traffic so with this in mind google now provide a boost in ranking in mobile device search results if your website is classed as mobile friendly. There are many criteria for this but some are size of text, button sizes and how close items are put together, however it is just as important to make sure that your customers have a great user experience what ever device they are viewing your website on.
